Alastair is a public speaker and an executive coach who focusses on the subjects of leadership, resilience and the development of high performing teams. Whether speaking or coaching Alastair combines what he learned as a result of a period of mental ill health in 2014 with a successful career in the commercial world from 1996 to today.
Alastair concluded his career as the Regional Managing Partner of the Dentons’ middle east business and as a member of the Dentons’ Executive Committee, roles he held until recently. Alastair was also a Board member at Dentons and held a number of other senior management positions both at Dentons and elsewhere.
Alastair has extensive leadership experience relevant to multi-cultural and multi-geographical locations and the building and maintenance of high performing teams.
Alastair’s career started in the British Army in 1987 where he served for nine years as an infantry officer including tours in Norway and Northern Ireland. On leaving the army in 1995 he qualified as a barrister where he practiced as a member of the Independent Bar for eleven years.
Resilience is often defined as the ability to recover from setbacks, to adapt well to change, and to keep going in the face of adversity.
Resilience matters because strong resilient individuals and teams are much more likely to be able to function effectively and productively in today’s demanding and ever changing commercial environment - an environment that is unlikely to change. In turn this leads to improved levels of sustainable performance and productivity, both individual and collective.
It is estimated that in the UK £26bn is lost per year due to work related stress and mental ill health. Globally it is estimated that 12 billion working days are lost per annum for the same reasons.
At its core resilience, both individual and collective, requires that a leader is able to both create trust and inspire confidence.
The pressure of work as a senior equity partner in a large law firm is pretty relentless and in 2014 that pressure encroached on every aspect of my life.
Combining the opportunity to reflect, nearly thirty years as a lawyer, eight years in the British Army and the events of 2014, Alastair is pleased to be able to deliver a series of workshops which explore the key attributes of high performing, resilient and successful individuals and leaders.
The best coaches create time and space for their clients in order that they can safely reflect, think and plan, without being judged.
Alastair adopts this approach and works with executives, leaders and elite sportsmen and women in order to allow them to maximise their impact. This is done in a way that is most effective for them personally, as well as for those with whom they work.
Alastair has developed a hands on and 'leaning in' approach to coaching which combined with his extensive experience both in the UK and middle east provides an effective coaching style which encourages his clients to develop into the very best versions of themselves.
Alastair works with a very limited number of clients at any one time. This permits each engagement to be entirely bespoke and tailored to the needs of the individual client, whatever that may be.
Whilst working with each client Alastair tries to ensure sure that, whilst demanding, the coaching experience is fun.
